Fact Friday – Early Intervention

Special Needs/Down Syndrome Portrait Photographer

You know how when you’re a first time mom you think “MAN, I wish this kid came with an instruction manual!”

Although children do not come with an instruction manual when you have a special needs child you do have extra resources and help than you would a “typical developing” child.

When my oldest son, DJ, was little, I turned to fellow moms for guidance, support, and therapy (no one knows what you are going through better than a mom who has been there!).

Before Cody was even born we were advised on all the resources that would be available for Cody and our family. There was so much information provided to us and it was encouraging knowing that we would have so much support.

When Cody was 3 months old, a teacher began visiting him at home twice a week to help with mobility and to teach us how we could best help him to gain strength to move around independently.

Since then he has received speech, occupational and physical therapy. All of which have been extremely helping in his development. The simple milestones that I took for granted with DJ did not come so easily for Cody and the various therapies helped him to achieve these milestones. Some were delayed, but nonetheless he achieved them!!!

Cody is now in his 2nd year of preschool and that alone has assisted tremendously in his progress – socially, physically and developmentally. He excels socially (apparently he is the flirt of the class) and tasks he could not do a few months ago are coming easily to him.

I can honestly say that early intervention has made such a huge difference in Cody’s development and I am thankful for all the resources and support that we have received.
