If I had half the energy that kids have then I would have….well…energy! :)

I met with this handsome young man recently and he had nothing but smiles for me.

Some of my favorite things to capture are the special things that are symbolic of each child’s phase in life.

For this little man, I made sure to photograph the toothless smile. I just love toothless smiles! :)

Really? Do boys have to have enviable lashes? SO unfair!!!

Little G had the best smiles and it took no effort to get a big grin out of him!

During the session, his mom found a lady bug and of course, what is a photographer to do, but include it in the session.

Right beside their house is this cool area with a creek. We made sure to utilize what was there and we got some model worth shots! :)

Eat your heart out Edward Cullen. You have NOTHING on little G!

What I love about this little man is that at the end of the session, he asked his mom to take a picture with him. Melted my heart.

Saying Goodbye is Never Easy

I should be used to it.

I'm not.

Growing up as a military brat, we moved every 2 years. I cried every time I had to say goodbye to friends.

This move will be no different.

Last week, we received great news. My husband received a too-good-to-pass-up job offer....in San Diego.

My husband travelled about 30 weeks last year and we missed him tremendously. I cannot tell you how excited I am that I will have a husband again and the boys' their dad again on more than just weekends.

Though I am excited for the move, there are many people I will miss here. The thought keeps bringing me to tears.

We will be moving in 21 days. There seems to be so much to do between now and then. Lots of people I want to see, a household to pack, a flight to San Diego to look for a home, and people I want to see. I know, I said that already :), but I really want to see some folks before I leave. :)

Goodbye never gets easier, does it?

Madison turns 6 Months!

You Were Given This Life....

I was reading about a new mom whose son was born with Down Syndrome. Just like I asked when I went through my pity party, she asked herself "why me?"

When I read that question, it reminded me of all the feelings I went through when we found out. The mourning, the fear, the uncertainty.

It is kind of funny how the mind works because without trying to come up with an answer, the words "thank you for letting it be me" popped into my head. I couldn't help but smile at myself.

Before Cody was born, I constantly questioned whether or not I was ready to properly parent him. My little aha moment reminded me that who cares if I'm ready or if I ever will be, I'm just happy it's me that gets to be his mom.

I saw this on Pinterest this morning and it fit perfectly with my thoughts today.

A New Year– No More Resolutions

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! I hope you all had a Holiday Season filled with nothing but simple joy!

I am trying something new this year – I am not making New Year’s Resolutions. I give up on pretending I am going to follow through on them because then I just feel guilty and bad about myself that I couldn’t follow through. Ya feel me?

Instead, this year, I am setting GOALS for myself. These goals don’t have a deadline. I don’t have pressure to fulfill them before the stroke of midnight on December 31, 2012. WHEW! :)

This year is going to be all about life changes.

I am going to make changes in my life one word at a time and this year, I have selected these three words to focus on:

1. Purge

2. Connections

3. Strength

Purging is by definition “to free from impurities; purify”. I began this process in December and it is amazingly freeing. Not only did I get rid of one of the main stresses in my life, but it helped me to find motivation again. I have been on a non-stop mission to rid our house of any unnecessary items. Yesterday, my husband had a trunk full of items to donate to Goodwill. :)

Not only do I plan on purging material items, but I want to “purge” in so many aspects of my life – from negative aspects in my life to factors that inhibit me from focusing on photography and the business to this “baby weight” (Yes, I still call it that even though Cody is 5!!! heehee) to my personal habits/flaws/characteristics that prevent me from enjoying life as well as to excuses as to why I don’t do things that I should be doing (like my excuses for not exercising).

This is going to be the year that I make the conscious effort to reconnect. I want to spend more time with friends and family that I haven’t seen in awhile, pick up the phone to call friends instead of message them on Facebook or texting, spend more time reconnecting with myself with “me time”, spend more time scrapbooking, sewing and crafting instead of just “collecting”, and also connecting through networking again.

I get so caught up with Social Media and the convenience of texting, IMing and Google Chatting, that I forget what a refreshing feeling it is to talk to someone in person and really connect. A couple of weeks ago, I picked up the phone and called one of my best friends. We chatted for 2 hours (until our cell phone batteries started beeping at us!). I can’t remember the last time I did that. It was such a rejuvenating, refreshing feeling to talk to her.

My last focus is Strength. This is something I want to build from the inside out.

Earlier last year, I told my cousin that I wished that I “looked the way I felt”.

Before I had kids, I worked my butt off (literally) to get down to 100 lbs and a size 0. I had never felt healthier, fitter, more confident in my life. I owned my body, heart and mind.

I don’t so much want the 100 lbs and size 0 anymore.

I want the “owning it”.

I’m the person that can walk in a room and talk to anyone without being shy. But then when I see pictures from the day that someone took, I look at it and think “goodness gracious great balls of fire, I didn’t realize I looked THAT big that night! I should have stayed home!” (Don’t you hate it when Negative Nelly comes popping in your head?)

I am determined to work on looking the way I feel. By that I don’t mean looking in the mirror and thinking I look great. I mean I want to look in the mirror and accept me. Plain and simple.

This strength will propel me to build my business as well by being confident enough to succeed.

In the words of Britney Spears (that’s right folks, I’m quoting Britney Spears):

Stronger than yesterday
Now it’s nothing but my way
My loneliness ain’t killing me no more
I’m stronger

Now, if you got past my Britney Spears moment, what is your take on resolutions? Do you make them? Are you focusing on “words” too this year? If so, I would love to hear them!

Family Fun at Silveyville

For this family’s session we headed out to Silveyville Tree Farm in Dixon. Though it was windy out there, we had a blast during the session! These 6 never fail to keep me entertained! ;)

We tried to get some sibling shots in when we could get them all together. Can you blame them for wanting to run around a tree farm? If I wasn’t carrying my camera bag, I probably would have done the same thing! :)

The three musketeers….

Some of my favorite shots are the solo shots of the kids. While some of them enjoyed riding on the “reindeers”, I snapped some happy smiles from them.

Little Man J wasn’t sure what to think of this photo session, but he still gave me his adorable, sly smile.

Are you ready to get your heart stolen? He took awhile to warm up and give me smiles, but check out this cutie!

Baby Bump Love

I miss being pregnant and when I see a pregnant mother’s glow like this mama has, I miss pregnancy even more!

This family will be a family of 4 pretty soon and I know this little bundle is going to be filled with love.

Little Miss M is going to be an amazing big sister. She is already loving and spoiling him with hugs and kisses!

I’ll Follow Her Lead…

When it comes to photographing toddlers, there is one thing that I have learned over the last 3 years – they are the boss. :)

This little cutie had such a personality that I was more than happy to follow her lead. :) Oh and I’m not above persuasion by food – in this case crackers - to inspire a child to like me. ;)

We headed out to Andrews Park in Vacaville for this family’s portrait session. It is one of my favorite locations because of how many different settings you can get in one location.

The brick wall of the Opera House was our first stop. Little Miss M wasn’t quite feeling me yet, but she was going to warm up to me soon…I just knew she would. ;)

Nothing like hanging out with Daddy to evoke the best smiles! Can you tell someone is a daddy’s girl? I loved watching her with her dad. She is SO in love with him!

Smile ‘Til Your Cheeks Hurt!

I had the pleasure of meeting with this fun family last week!

Some of my favorite sessions are those I walk away from and my cheeks and stomach are sore from laughing too much. This was definitely one of those sessions!

Each of them had such great yet different personalities. Can you tell by smile alone (in each of the shots) which one was the ham of the family??

Wooden Valley Winery is one of my favorite locations for a portrait session. You can’t even tell they were sitting in the parking lot, can you? :) That’s because they make the shot look good regardless of location! :)

This is one of my favorite shots of the family. It took awhile for all of us to stop laughing to get this one (if only I could show you the image I captured right before this one heehee).

I love to see how happy couples are after years of marriage. Doesn’t it make you just smile and say “ahhhhh”.

A Fall Mother/Son Session in San Bruno

I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing this family last year. They were such a pleasant family to work with that I was excited when they scheduled a session this year!

This session was a special session of just mom and her handsome son.

They were dressed in fall colors and I think they somehow managed to get the tree in the background to coordinate with their outfits as well! :)

Children have this ability to be completely comfortable in front of the camera. Mr. J did not mind taking a break from playing to strike some poses in front of the camera for me. :)

These two have been friends since preschool and I enjoyed seeing how close of a friendship they have.

3 Pretty Ladies!

One of my favorite things about photography is getting to see families for their annual Fall/Holiday portrait sessions and seeing how much their children have grown.

Last weekend, I met with 2 families that had portrait sessions this same time last year. It was fun to see how much these girls have grown since our last session.

I enjoyed photographing this beautiful mother and her 2 equally beautiful daughters.

I love how the background is perfectly fall and matches their outfits. Thank you San Bruno Park for being a beautiful setting! :)

I love how willing these little girls were to get in front of the camera! Some kids have a tendency to be so shy in front of the camera, but these two were volunteering to go first for their solo shots!

Big sister went first and was a rockstar in front of the camera!

Little sister was equally willing and did an awesome job herself! Aren’t they both just absolutely adorable??? I swear little sister’s lashes have grown since last year!

Life is GRAND at the Grand Californian Hotel

This hotel definitely lives up to its name and did not disappoint! Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa was absolutely gorgeous both inside and outside!

In October, my husband, kids and I spent a week at this amazing hotel. We had made our reservations in June and have been counting down until our stay there. We had visited the hotel’s lobby and a couple of its restaurants during previous Disneyland visits and this hotel just kept calling our name! Sooooo, we answered and booked a stay. :)

When you walk into the hotel, the first thing you see is this beautiful work of art that serves as their main entry doors. GORGEOUS! The sunlight hits it just right and it is stunning!

Aside from just the overall architecture of the hotel, my favorite thing about the hotel is the light fixtures. Everywhere you turn, there is a different design. These three are my favorites.

Wouldn’t this make an awesome living room? At least a couple times a day, we would come down to just sit here.

Here is the same area from the 3rd floor. Throughout the day, a pianist entertained us with beautiful music. Of course, I happened to take a picture when they weren’t playing (though I was hoping they would be there!). The fireplace was such a cozy place to just relax.

These gorgeous gigantic chandeliers hung high above the seating area. From our floor, we were at level with them. Don’t think I didn’t think about just jumping from the railing, hopping on the chandelier and swinging on them like they do in movies. :)

I don’t remember where this view was from, but I think it was above the stained glass doors. I think that balcony was the seating area on our floor. If ever I get to build a home from scratch, this is what I want to see when I walk into the front doors of my house!

Somehow, even the creepy crow statue looked beautiful in the Grand Californian! My older son for some reason really liked this bird and wanted me to take a picture of it. Oddly, I like how the picture turned out.

And lastly, my older son and I’s favorite part of every evening – the milk chocolates left in our room after they turned our beds down. They left them EVERY night. :)

If ever you have the opportunity to stay at this hotel, I HIGHLY suggest it. We purposely spent just a few hours a day at the parks so we could come back to the hotel and just relax.

It has its own private entrance to California Adventure and you even get early bird entry into both parks with your stay. That alone was worth it. We were able to ride Star Tours without waiting 80 minutes like everyone else! :)

A Mother’s Love

The rain stopped long enough this past weekend to give me the opportunity to photograph a loving mom and her adorable son.

The theme of this session was simple, “love”. We wanted to capture the love that she has for her son.

This image oozes nothing but love! It speaks of the special bond that mothers have with their sons. The “I never want to let you grow up” feeling that us moms all feel.

This was the first time I went out to Tilden Park and the view was AH-MAZING! It was the perfect setting for mom and son to have some fun! The hills were full of trees and just an absolutely beautiful setting!

Who doesn’t love some Ring Around the Rosy?

One of my favorite things about capturing families is witnessing the love between them. This mom has so much love to give her little man and you can tell that he absolutely adores her as well!

A Fall-tastic Family Session

We headed out to Rush Ranch in Suisun for this family's Fall/Holiday portrait session.

Big brother has been in front of my camera a few times, but this was the first time I was photographing his equally adorable little sister so I was pretty excited!

Big brother was such a little ham and came up with poses all on his own. As soon as the camera was pointed at him, I got this HUGE smile!

Little sister was enjoying the sights and sounds at Rush Ranch, but took moments to give me her adorable chubby cheek smiles!

Big brother is very much in love with his little sister and made sure he gave her some big loving during the session. :)

Down Syndrome Awareness Month - What I Want You To Know

October is designated as Down Syndrome Awareness month. For us parents blessed with children with Down Syndrome, every day is a day for awareness.

I know I have said it before, but I am an open book when it comes to my experiences of parenting Cody. I want people to know the good and the bad because I don't want them to feel the pressure of having to terminate their pregnancy because of a diagnosis. I want people to realize the potential of individuals with Down Syndrome. I also want parents of children with Down Syndrome to know that they aren't alone. If you are going through an experience (good or bad), I am sure someone else has gone through it also. There is always someone willing to support you and cheer you on through the more challenging times.

I was ignorant about Down Syndrome until I found out (at 5 months pregnant) that Cody had Down Syndrome. I was terrified of the unknown. I didn't think I was a good enough parent to give him everything he needs.

When I look at this face and this smile, I know I am doing pretty darn well. :)

And when I see this smile, I remember that life is good....scratch "good", make that AWESOME!

Is it challenging? Do I worry about his future? Do I worry that his feelings will get hurt when someone treats him as "different"? Do I not want to let go of him and try to protect him as much as possible? Bet your bottom dollar the answers are all "yes", but I have the same worries and challenges for my "typical" child, too, and I'm sure my parents had the same challenges and worries about me.

He is my daily reminder that everything is okay. His world is as perfect as he sees it and I need to see the same thing.

As Down Syndrome Awareness Month comes to an end, I want to share the top things I want you to know.

Down Syndrome is not contagious. You will not catch it so don't be afraid to talk to someone with Down Syndrome.
Though some may not be as verbal as their peers, they understand what you are saying. Be nice and talk to them as you would anyone else their age.
Some of their characteristics and quirkiness you may perceive as "odd", but really, who isn't a little quirky or odd? :)
Anything you can do, they can do, too. My little guy can get down and funky with the rest of them in Hip Hop class and learn an entire routine. I know adults that can't do that! :)

and the most important one

Don't treat them any differently than you would any other person. Bottom line, they are still people with feelings and hearts.

The Women Behind Sweetie Pea Creations

I was excited when Marilyn of Barker Home Services asked me to take some promotional pictures of her and her daughter for their new business, Sweetie Pea Creations.

(Quick testimonial about Sweetie Pea Creations - When Marilyn told me about these new bath products that utilize sea salt, I was curious and purchased a fragrance oil and body scrub from her. I wanted to try the products out mostly because they smelled wonderful and was skeptical about the "healing" trait of sea salt. I had used the body scrub and fragrance oil (in place of body lotion) for only 2 days when I noticed that a patch of eczema that I had on my foot had disappeared. This dry patch of skin had been there for SEVEN years and prescription creams and lotions had never made a change on it. I was AMAZED to say the least that the sea salt products had made a difference in only TWO days!)

We set out to a local park to photograph some headshots of this mother/daughter team. Little Miss J is part owner in Sweetie Pea Creations, so we let her call the shots on some of the images. :)

This is my favorite image from the day of the duo!

Miss J had had an idea to take some pictures of her at the playground. It sure brought out a big smile out of her!

In addition to their bath products, they also have a line of charm bracelets. I am learning that there seems to be a charm for just about everything - including motorcycles, professing a loving for chocolate, and even one for a C-5. Ah-mazing. ;)

At a recent wedding, Miss J caught the bride's bouquet. She wanted to incorporate it into the photo session so not only did we use it as a background for the products (see above), but she used it as a prop for her solo headshot.

Marilyn is a business-savvy woman and I am sure this new endeavor will be a success! She definitely already has a devoted fan in me! :)

Family Ties - Family Portrait Session at Andrews Park

Last year, I photographed this family because big sister was heading off to college.

This year, the family got together for a family portrait session before their younger son left for boot camp. This session was all about him and I wanted to focus on how much love they all have for him.

I enjoy session with this family because I appreciate their closeness. Even with the kids are all grown up now, you can still sense the love between all of them. I hope I have this same connection with my kids when they grow up. :)

We made sure to take some of Mr. P with his parents and his big sister. I know they are going to miss him so much!

This is my favorite of the siblings. :)

This image makes me want to get sentimental about how fast these kids grew up, but I won't. :) Instead, I wil leave you with these two huge smiles! :)

Sisterly Love

I have known these three sisters since they were in elementary school. We all went to high school together then eventually all got one of our first jobs at Scandia Family Fun Center together. :) I have been fortunate to still be in touch with them after 20 years of friendship!

When one of them came to visit from Japan, they wanted to get together for a photo session with their families.

This is the first time they all got to meet this little cutie!

Little man received TONS of love from his cousins!

Here are the sisters with their families (minus one member). :)

Their mom happens to be vacationing here as well so she joined us for the session, too!

These three have already left to go back home and I know the family here misses them dearly - especially the happy little one!

Here is big sister with her family. Here boys kept me smiling. The older son has an endless collection of expressions! He definitely was NOT shy in front of the camera!

Newborn Happiness

I am excited to share this little bundle of newborn cuteness!

This little girl was born in August and I had the opportunity to photography her about a week after her birth!

She is probably the FIRST newborn that has slept through an entire session with me. :)

Look at her smiling in her sleep. I have always wondered what babies are dreaming of when they smile in their sleep.

This pose was all baby I. She didn’t need photo coaching. ;)

Foster City Fun by the Lake

Before I start this post, I just have to say how excited I am to 1) Finally post a blog post and 2) Finally have computer functionality after my computer crashed multiple times and ultimately, ending up needing a new hard drive. Thank goodness for my hardware savvy husband and helping me to gain my sanity back by fixing my PC. WOOT to the WOOT.

And now back to the session!

Before surgery in August, I met with this smiling mother/son duo. The session was filled with smiles, laughter and love!

Nothing brings on laughter like a tickle contest. That instantly had little man laughing and smiling!

A quick hug around mom’s neck turned into a raspberry-fest!

You can tell by the smile on his face that he is LOVED!

The session not only started with a tickle contest, but also ended with one. I think mom won this round, little man!

Family Fun on the Beach–Baker Beach (San Francisco)

I have been impatiently waiting for this session!

I just love this beautiful lady’s personality so I was anxious to meet her family and see if they shared her sense of humor. I was NOT disappointed!!!

We headed to Baker Beach in San Francisco and I silently begged for a clear sky so we could see the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.

The begging worked and look what’s behind them…YUP the Golden Gate Bridge!

I LOVED LOVED LOVED spending time with this family! They had me laughing the entire time yet they still managed to have seconds of “seriousness” for great images like this! :)

What’s a beach session without a stroll down the beach, right?

I was able to get mom and dad alone for some shots of just the two of them. How sweet are they?? (Imagine that I am saying that in my little old lady voice heehee).

Now THIS is my favorite image of the two of them!! It is OOOOZING love!

These kids were HILARIOUS! Little sister had ideas for the session and these two happily went along with them.

There is a super funny background story to this picture. I won’t share the details, but the expression on big brothers’ faces pretty much tells you the story. ;)

1st Birthday CUTENESS Overload

You met this little cutie in November.

Now, get ready for even more cuteness from her as we celebrate the milestone of her first birthday!!!

We headed to a park in Vacaville to capture some images with her mom and dad.

Then this princess had a chance to steal the spotlight and show me all the fun things that she can now do!

This gummy smile makes me smile!

She LOVED being on the slide!

It was fun watching her pull herself up to a stand. Doesn’t she look so proud of herself? She has every reason to! :)

We enjoyed a little picnic time at the park – complete with a picnic basket full of “food” and utensils.

If this expression doesn’t say “hey, where’s the food?”, I don’t know what does!

We then headed to her house for her to show me her crawling skillzzzz. Birthday girl, you have the crawling down!

What birthday isn’t complete without a cake smash?

The birthday girl had an adorable Minnie Mouse candle to top her little cake.

Without hesitation, she jumped right into the smashing!

Can you just hear her telling that cake that he’s going down??? …into her belly, that is!

I am pretty confident that the birthday girl won this battle…

…and she has the frosted face to prove it!

I saved my favorite (of MANY) for last. While the birthday girl was getting cleaned up, the bathtub seemed to have the BEST lighting! It enhanced the birthday girl’s super-de-duper adorable face and her blue, blue eyes!!!

Happy birthday, Baby T, I am sure the next time I see you, you will be walking and I won’t be able to keep up with you!

Family Portraits in the “Woods” at Huddart Park

I was introduced to this insanely gorgeous park by this wonderful family of three. Visiting this park made me realize I have spent WAY too much time in suburbia and need to get out more. I had not even realized that this beautiful woodsy area was pretty much in our backyard – only an hour away from Solano.

We headed out to Huddart Park in Woodside for this family’s portrait session.

This trio was full of smiles and I enjoyed spending time with them!

Their daughter was an absolute rockstar in front of the camera!

This was my first time taking pictures out in the woods, but they made it easy for me by finding just the right settings! Check out this moss-covered tree trunk they found! A PERFECT setting!

There was a little creek flowing throughout the park. Yet another ideal location.

And lastly, this little bridge served as my favorite setting.

This loving family was a pleasure to photograph! Thank you for introducing me to the beauty of Woodside! :)

Sibling Sweetness in San Mateo

What do I love most about photography? That I get to meet and photograph cute, fun kids!

These two were no exception! I met this duo along with their parents at (yet another) gorgeous park in San Mateo. I never knew San Mateo had so many beautiful parks!

Big sister was a natural in front of the camera and had nothing but smiles for me!

Possibly a model in the making?

Little brother was a little apprehensive, but with a little bit of loving from dad, he was a little more willing to give me some smiles!

I know I have said this repeatedly, but I just enjoy the security that little ones have in their parents arms. Nothing says love like a gigantic smile from a little one while in daddy’s arms!

A Pause in Portrait Sessions

If there is one thing I have a difficult time doing it is sitting still. There is just something about not being able to do daily tasks that makes me uncomfortable. The thought of not being able to do what I want to do gives me anxiety. The thought of not being able to do my normal activity for 6-8 weeks is driving me CRAZY!

So why am I jabbering on and what does any of that have to do with my blog title, you ask?

Next Friday I will be having surgery on my right shoulder. YUCK!

I have avoided this surgery for 2 years now, but now I am to the point of pain that I have to have the surgery done.

Unfortunately, SLR cameras are designed with the shutter button on the right side of the camera. And although my husband has offered to hold the camera for me during portrait sessions (bless his heart), there will be a slight pause in my scheduling of portrait sessions.

I am hopeful for a mid-October return!!!!

Photography Tip– Capturing the First Day of School

As a scrapbooker, I feel the need to photograph and document details of events. The first day of school is always one I make sure to capture.

My goal is to capture the excitement (or lack of), the newness and the “smallness” of my children as they enter a new school year.

When taking pictures of the first day of school, be sure to capture all the details. I like to capture all the little details that I know I may not remember later, but will likely want to look back on.

Like little backpacks packed and ready to go…

Capture the expression of a child excited to go to elementary school for the first time…

Capture the expression of the child that wished summer never ended…(My boys could not be more opposite than each other! )

You will want to remember the tender gesture of an older sibling holding his younger sibling’s hand as they wait for the school gates to open.

Photograph a cubby bearing your child’s name. The cubby that will no longer exist after Kindergarten.

If you’re child jumps right into class activities and does not want to say goodbye to you because he is excited to be at school, then just keep shooting – even if it is behind a camera with tear-filled eyes that can’t see clearly because you are hiding the fact that you are crying behind the camera. (Note: the last statement may or may not be factual. I make no claims to the fact that I may or may not have cried because my son is in Kinder and was too excited to be at school to take pity upon his may or may not be crying mom.)

If you have traditions for before or after school, be sure to photograph them as well.

For our after-school tradition, the kids come home to treats awaiting them. For the one with a sweet-tooth, a brownie.

For the one without a sweet tooth, a couple of bags of his favorite snack.

Tip Tuesday–Capturing A Newborn Baby

Before my niece was born, I made sure to study Your Baby in Pictures so that I would remember exactly what the “essential” shots were!

In the 0-3 months chapter, Me Ra not only discusses tips for photographing a newborn, but she also identifies some of the “must-have” images.

She suggests capturing images within the first 30 minutes of birth.

Because Madison was brought directly to the nursery, my only option was to take pictures from behind the nursery window. If you run into this obstacle, don’t let it stop you. Just keep shooting and you can still capture special “just born” moments.

I had the opportunity to review this product and I have to admit that it is now an essential in my makeup bag. I have not tried it as a blush (mostly because I don’t know how to apply blush and let’s face it, no one wants to see me walking out of the house looking like a clown that applied makeup in her sleep), but I really really like the Rose shade as a lipstick.

Family Fun in Central Park

For this recent session, we headed to Central Park. Not New York, but in San Mateo. ;)

With the extra rainy weather we had during the spring, this family’s session kept getting rescheduled. We were excited for the sunny weather to finally arrive so we took advantage of it!

The first thing you notice about this family is the smiles. Each one of them beamed a smile when I met them. I heart smiley people. ;) The second thing you notice, is what a beautiful family they are!

This is probably one of my favorites from their session. Big brother had a way of making little sister smile and laugh. Aren’t they just too sweet together???

The one thing that could make big brother smile was talking about Star Wars. Lucky for me, I know my Jedi-talk.

Little Sister is just a little over 1 and full of curiosity. I loved watching her explore, chase after brother and watch everything around her.

She took a pause from sitting with brother in this image and I just love the expression on her face.

OH! I forgot to mention the special guest during our photo session! Meet Fluffy the Snail. Big brother found him on his way to meet with me. Fluffy the Snail was kind enough to stay through the entire session and wait patiently on the sidelines. ;)

I Heart Faces - Water

When I saw that the I Heart Faces’ weekly photo challenge this week was about water, I immediately thought of this picture.

I call it my “I Hope You Dance” picture because it makes me think of the lyrics

“I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance”

This song always reminds me of Cody’s heart surgery and hospital stay (along with the song “My Wish”) and how strong a person I want him to be in life (both my boys for that matter). Hmmm…maybe this is why Cody loves to dance? Because I would whisper this song to him while he was in the hospital and he took it literally? :)

Baby Love–Meet Baby Madison

It is with beaming proudness that I introduce to you my niece, Madison!

We have been impatiently waiting for her arrival and we are so excited that she is finally here! This little girl is nothing short of a miracle baby and we are elated that her and mom are doing unbelievably well!

Without further ado, Baby Madison Rose. (Her name was kept a secret from all of us until she was born. Oddly enough, at a baby shower in April I guessed her name- both first and middle name!!)This little cutie and I share the same middle name now. :) It is my mom’s name.

At just one week old, she knew what was up. Her shirt says “my aunt is the best!”. Wonder where she got that shirt from??? hmmmm

Nothing is more peaceful than a sleeping baby. They look like sweet Angels.

Because I have boys, I have been waiting to have a little girl around to wear a tutu! I cannot wait until she is old enough to walk and sport a tutu with cowboy boots! :)

The workshop will be designed to teach you how to use your SLR camera as well as teach you techniques and tips to help you capture that “perfect” image.

This is an entry level workshop and all you will need to know about photography is how to turn on your camera. I will teach you the rest.

Late Post - Happy 8th Birthday to DJ!

Yes, this post is late, but for the sake of entertaining me, let’s pretend that today is June 24 – we were on vacation during his birthday (and I didn’t bring a laptop) so that’s a good excuse for a late post, right? :)

For DJ’s birthday, we took a trip to Southern California. I wanted to take advantage of the beach so we took his pictures at Solano Beach in San Diego. It was a bit cold, but after being in Northern California for a few years now, the boys were so excited to see the beach that they didn’t even notice it was cold!

Reluctant to have his birthday session, bribery of playing at the playground at the beach motivated my son into a (for the most part) painless photo session.

Based on this picture, you would think it was torture for your mom to take your “formal” picture ONCE a year.

But with a promise of playing at the playground, you get this….

I just love that he is at the toothless stage! He is missing 3 teeth and as a mother, I could not wait for the moment when I would hear my child say “thith” instead of “this”, “monther” instead of “monster”. Oh the simple things that make me smile. :)

This happens every time – Cody picture bombs DJ’s birthday session. :) Can you hear him saying “CHEESE”?

In honor of DJ’s 8th birthday, here are my top 8 things I love about DJ:

1. He is FUNNY! He creates elaborate, hysterical stories to entertain us (did you know (that according to DJ), the people that have to clean up roadkill “get” to take the roadkill home for dinner?) He also has hilarious one liners that keep us laughing for days (“An ATM is an Automatic Teller Machine? It TELLS on you to your parents when you do something wrong?”)

2. He is a love bug – While his brother often protests at mommy-hug attacks, DJ is always willing to let me give him an “anaconda squeeze” Nacho Libre style.

3. He loves to read – Just like his dad and me, you can often find him lost in a book. Sometimes finishing a large chapter book in just a couple of days.

4. He is smart – When it comes to school, he takes it seriously and effortlessly does well. He just finished his 2nd grade school year, but reads at a 5th grade level. Yes, I am a proud mommy!

5. He is just like me – though at the same time, this is the cause of many good battles between us :)

6. He is caring – When he was 3 and his brother came out of his almost 30-day hospital stay, DJ advised us that Cody was HIS baby and that he would take care of him. He fed him, held him and once even tried to change his diaper. Even through all the occasional bickering, he is still quick to help his brother out when needed, even if it is sometimes to help him into something he is not supposed to get into. :) That’s what a big brother is for, right?

7. He is athletic – I am by far nowhere near being athletic. Fortunately for DJ, he is like his dad and can try something once and be good at it. I envy him for that!

8. He is DJ! - I love this boy for all that he is – funny, smart, stubborn, goofy, literal, studious, energy-filled, ALL boy, and one of my first true loves!

College Bound–Congratulations P and H!

I met with these two recent graduates last week for a portrait session before she moved away for college this week.

We headed out to one of my favorite local locations, Wooden Valley Winery. (Of course, I went and purchased a bottle of wine afterwards). :)

These two “kids” just graduated from a local high school last week! Congratulations, P and H, on your graduation and I wish you the best in high school and on your endeavors. Success lies ahead of you!

These two were shy at first…

…but slowly warmed up…

…until the real smiles and personalities came out.

Then they couldn’t stop smiling at each other.

Love this one!!!

P has tons of expressions and kept H and I laughing the entire time.

You can even see a smile during his “serious” face.

I’m not sure what it was, but he sure liked to jump up and click his heels Mary Poppins style. I’m sure it was an inside joke between the two of them. :)

H was hesitant to jump in on the fun.

But soon she was airborne, too!

Model in the Making–Part Deux

For the outdoor portrait session for Little Miss L we headed to Rush Ranch in Suisun City. This location is gorgeous and full of perfect portrait backgrounds.

There was a wedding at the Ranch that day so we had limited options, but we still worked it.

Lucky for us, the cows weren’t out to pasture so we were able to use the field without worried about getting mobbed by a herd. (We did have to watch our step VERY carefully, though!)

There is just something about a rustic fence that I just can’t pass up.

One of my favorite things at Rush Ranch is the long entrance road. The wind was blowing pretty good that day (Suisun does mean “ways of the west winds” after all) so she got to experience wind-blown hair – model style!

Sometimes,the oddest places make a great setting. She was standing inside the water tank thing (is there an official name for that?).

Even through the wind, the distracting smell of delicious BBQ and the sound of music reminiscent of Father of the Bride, Little Miss L was an awesome model!

Isn’t she adorable?

Even the horse (his name escapes me) couldn’t help but strike a pose!

The barn’s doors and the post in front of it were such opportune locations for posing!

Again, thank you Miss L for being a great little model and for working it in front of the camera! Don’t forget to introduce me to JB when you make it big! ;)

Fact Friday - Preschool Graduation - You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby!

Cody graduated yesterday.

I didn't cry.

All week, I built up anxiety over the thought of my baby boy graduating from preschool. I know it is just preschool, but it is so much more than that (probably more so when your child has special needs).

3 years ago, Cody started preschool with me a constant in the classroom - a security blanket by his side.

(These pictures were from his first day at school. He was so tiny!).

The entire first year of preschool, he kept a close eye on me ensuring that I never left the classroom. If I stood up from the chair I was sitting in, his spidey senses would kick in from across the classroom and he was immediately by my side. I participated in circle time, dance time, outdoor play time and even snack time. The other kids probably thought I flunked preschool a few too many years and was the oldest preschooler in history. :)

I felt miserable the first few weeks wondering if I was doing the right thing - if I was pushing him too early.

The reward came in the last couple months of the school year when out of nowhere he gave me a hug and kiss and say goodbye. He was read to fly solo and no longer needed a security blanket.

I'm not sure what was harder on me - him still being my baby and needing me so much that he couldn't handle being in class without my presence or him growing up enough to not need me there. (Oh the roller coaster of emotion that the love for out children bring to us!!!)

Now, 3 years later I sat in the audience beaming with pride that my baby boy enthusiastically completed 3 years of of preschool.

Just this year, I have watched him grow from the child who preferred to sit quietly and watch to the boy who can't jump up fast enough to be front and center to show everyone how to "put a ring on it" when Single Ladies is played during circle time. I have witnessed his adoration for his teachers, whom he was hesitant to trust 2 years ago (he has had the same wonderful, caring and nurturing teachers for the last 2 years), grow in such a beautiful way that it makes it even more difficult to say goodbye to them. I have had my heart filled when we walk into his classroom after class has started and we are greeted with "Coco is here!!!!!" by classmates who missed him the 20 minutes he was not there. I have beamed with "that's my boy" pride when I see his compassion towards his friends. Each friend (and even their parents) is often greeted with warm hugs and pats on the back when Cody sees them.

I thought that watching him graduate would make me cry like a baby - because that's just the way I am. But surprisingly, I didn't cry. Instead, I was filled with overwhelming joy. The kind that makes you smile so much that your cheeks hurt. The kind of joy that makes your heart smile a big fat smile.

He graduated from preschool.

In a world where some countries do not allow children with down syndrome to attend school - MY SON GRADUATED PRESCHOOL. :)

He may not have the vocabulary of a "typical" 5 year old or write his name, but he is ready for kindergarten. He knows all his letters (in and out of order), can read his name as well as a few other words), and can count to 20 and write majority of the numbers (but only when HE feels like it). :)

With each unexpected step that he takes....he makes us proud.

(Speaking of proud, Papa, Mama and Uncle were at his graduation, too).

He has made us realize that it is not the typical milestones that we need to appreciate and that matter most. It is the small milestones and achievements that matter. BUT it gives us a huge sense of gratification when he accomplishes milestones that others previously said he could not accomplish because of his down syndrome diagnosis. With each of these accomplishments, I always say a silent (but polite) "in your face!!!!" :)

We are all SO SUPER proud of you, Codester!!!

In one month, you are starting the “K” word. I know you are going to do great! You are a ROCKSTAR, baby boy!

Model in the Making

Last week, I got together with adorable L for headshot images to get her started on her portfolio.

L was so easy going and easy to photograph. She had such a glow about her.

It was difficult to select favorites, but here are a few (okay, maybe more than a few) of my favorites from her session.

She went from smiling to serious without hesitation. I bet if I asked her to cry, she could do that on queue, too :)

I can’t believe I’m going to say it…

I have not been looking forward to this age.

I have been in denial that it was coming.

There is just something about it that makes it “official” big boy age.

He’s not a big boy….

He’s my baby!

Cody Baby!!!!

My little sunshine turned 5 today. SIGH….

5 years ago today, we waited with anticipation and breaths held as we waited for a cry, a scream, a “he’s okay” from the doctor.

5 years ago today, we didn’t know what our lives would be like as we began the journey as parents of a child with Down Syndrome.

We didn’t know the depths of love this child would bring to all of us.

That extra little something (Trisomy 21 to be exact), gave him an extra does of love (or stubbornness depending on the day ).

He starts the “K” word this summer. And we know he’s ready (though I still am not!). He enjoys books and is apparently already trying to plan what he is going to be when he grows up (as evident by the book in his hand).

He is a smart boy….

that loves to count…

…that will tell me how old he is (with attitude, of course).

…that will find his tongue more amusing than me while I try to photograph him.

….that is a little goofball who loves to make people smile and laugh…at random moments…

...that loves to jump….

….that doesn’t hide his emotions and always lets me know when I have bored him. ;)

Lovely Baby Bump…Check It Out

As I sat here editing these images, I could not help but sing – “her bump, her bump…her lovely baby bump”.

In just a few short months (or less), I will get to meet the lovely lady bump inside this beautiful mama!

You see, this is just not ANY baby.

The little baby girl cooking in that tummy is my niece and I cannot wait to meet her (and “borrow” her and never return her heehee).

Her parents and I headed out to Rush Ranch for a maternity session. The sky was clear, but the wind was unforgiving. It did make for some great “long hair flowing in the wind” shots, though! :)

It is always the loving images they do not realized are being captured that end up my favorite.

Don’t you just love the glow of a pregnant woman????

These flowers were in full bloom….and just happened to be a favorite flower of Mama-To-Be.

Once our allergies took over, we decided to head inside for some more baby bump pictures.

It has been awhile since I have bored you with my randomness. You know what that means, right? You're overdue!! :)

Here are some Michelle random traits to help you get to know the person behind the camera.

1. I often wish life were like Grease or Glee and that I could bust out in song and dance ANYTIME I want to - especially in the Target checkout line.

2. Speaking of Target - you can find me there at least once or twice a week - at minimum.

3. If I could be any animal in the world I would want to be a jellyfish. No reason behind it. I just want to be a jellyfish.

4. I have been known to start singing Part of Your World at the top of my lungs (San Diego roomies can attest to this) even when the movie is not on.

5. In high school, I aspired to be Paula Abdul. Not LIKE Paula Abdul, I wanted to BE Paula Abdul. The girl had moves!!!!

6. I don't like hot weather....or cold weather. Must be why I love (and desperately miss) San Diego!! :)

On March 15th, Me Ra Koh’s new book, Your Baby In Pictures, was released on Amazon.

I was excited about the book (even though I don’t have a baby, but know enough pregnant mama’s to be excited about a book like this) and preordered it.

I wanted to stalk the mailman until it came in, but considering he walks around with an oxygen tank I didn’t think it would be very nice of me to scare him with my stalking.

SOOOO instead I waited (im)patiently for this to arrive on the 17th…

I couldn’t wait to look inside and even stood in the garage skimming through it. :)

I Heart Faces Challenge –Shadows

This week’s theme is Shadows at I Heart Faces. I was giddy when I saw this theme because just last week, the boys and I were outside in the backyard and I was taking pictures of Cody’s shadow (it is one of his best friends after all!).

Background to the shot – Cody had his first T-Ball game coming up and I wanted to practice with him. As I was setting up the tee, he disappeared. I found him standing on the deck playing the bat like it was a trumpet!

If there are two things my boy loves the most right now, it is 1) music and 2) his shadow.

This picture defines who he is so well.

Italy Diary - SNOW! and the Gelisi Antonio Winery

Yes, I am still dragging out my Italy memories. :)

On our 4th day in Italy, we woke up to find this on the hillside behind our hotel room.

SNOW!!!!! I had not even realized that it snowed in Italy (especially where we were) so it was a nice surprise.

That morning, one of my high school friends, whose husband is stationed out there, picked me up from my hotel room and brought me to this town hidden off one of the main roads. I would have never been able to find it on my own, so THANK YOU JOANNE!!!!

This town was so quite and peaceful (as were all the surrounding towns).

What made this town extra special was the spring that was hidden toward the back of the town. The water was so amazingly blue!!!

That “what appears to be little” crevice in the rocks is an entrance to a cave. Apparently, a number of people get lost in that cave. I guess I can’t blame them. I’d follow the beautiful blue water, too, to see where it lead to.

There were cute little bridges and walkways that lined the water.

I could have sat there and stared at this for hours (if it wasn’t 20 something degrees, that is).

The next day, I approached the front desk to ask if the local winery, Gelisi Antonio, conducted tours and wine tasting.

Maximo’s response was “Yes, I will call and set up a private tour for you. Make sure you eat before you go because 3 glasses will make you drunk.”

HUH? Glasses?

This rode led us to the winery. Gorgeous, right?

We arrived to find the bottling truck there. That in itself was fun to watch since we had never seen the process before.

We were VERY tempted to grab a glass and stick it under this hose. That’s a waste of some good wine, people!!

Our unexpected host for the tour was the owner himself, Sergio Gelisi. He is an extremely nice gentleman that takes prides in his company.

We expected to find a room full of oak barrels filled with wine, but instead found this…

I was hoping for old school methods of wine making, but instead found myself remembering a scene from the movie Strange Brew.

Even the storage area had beautiful architecture. I loved the ceilings.

We took a walk around the vineyard and it was a gorgeous, peaceful view.

After Sergio had completed the tour, his sister Roberta, provided us with glasses full of wine for the wine tasting. It is definitely not like wine tasting here in California. Maximo was right about needing to eat before going.

My favorite is definitely the Moscato. It was like drinking grape juice. Needless to say, I did NOT share my bottles with my husband when we got home. ;) I haven’t even drank my last bottle yet because they don’t sell the wine here in California. Any East Coast or Texas folks want to do me a favor and scope out your AAFES or local wine stores?

Yes, we tasted them all. When in Italy…., right?

The car ride back to the hotel was yet another opportunity to enjoy the beautiful sunset.

We returned from dinner to see the snow glowing on the mountain tops. SOOO PEACEFUL!!!!

Fun at the Suisun Waterfront with Two Adorable Boys!

Last week, we had our first break in the sun. It was a perfect opportunity to get together with these handsome little boys! They were kind enough to humor me and let me take their pictures while the temptation of a playground was right behind me. What will power boys!!!

First up, is adorable Mr. K. Though the temptation to run past me was evident, he continued to stand there and just flash me that handsome smile with those AMAZING eyelashes!

K has SO much personality! With a smile like this, he could convince me that pigs could fly and the sky was green. Cute, I tell ya!!

He was able to flash a smile then go to this look without hesitation or coaxing.

Did I mention how insane his lashes were????

Not to be outdone, little brother J had even longer lashes – if that is possible!

These two are absolutely adorable together! Big brother did Little Piggy with baby brother’s toes and it was the cutest thing.

Brotherly love….ahhhh….

He wasn’t quite enjoying the grass, but stood there long enough to look this cute. :)

TBall | Down Syndrome Fact Friday

The one thing we want to ensure for Cody’s life is that he lives as normal a life as possible and that includes sports! We are a little limited by what sports he can participate in due to his Atlanto-axial instability so T-Ball was a perfect option for us. (His big brother thinks we should stick with band due to his brother’s (as he refers to it) “fragile neck”, but I think T-Ball is pretty safe for us.)

Even better is the fact that the Little League organization has what is called a Challenger league. It is specifically for children with disabilities. It is a great way for kids with any disability to be involved in T-Ball. There are children of varying ages and diagnosis. It fills my hear to know that organized sports like this made it an effort to think about our little guys and wanted to include them. GO LITTLE LEAGUE!!!

Here is my little guy decked out in his Giants gear for the Opening Ceremonies.

Who’s number 1? Cody’s number 1!!!

At the opening ceremony, all the teams and their coaches were introduced.

See my kid on the left? The one yawning? Ya, that’s him.

Little League Opening Ceremony is probably the last place I thought I would find myself crying.

The last team to get introduced was the Challenger team.

The VP of the league (who is also one of the team coaches) gave a full introduction to these kids. He prefaced with the intention for inclusion as well as the ability to provide these children with the normalcy of playing on a real baseball/T-ball team.

As the team was introduced, the entire audience started applauding and cheering for this team. We sat through the entire opening ceremony with primarily families and friends cheering for their own children’s team. Yet, when the Challenger league was introduced, they were greeted with a crowd clapping, hooting and hollering for them. As I sat atop the bleachers, I beamed with pride (and thanked myself for remembering to bring sunglasses – really? who cries at opening ceremonies???).

ACCEPTANCE.

As we soon enter into the “real” world of school and “growing up”, my biggest fear for Cody is acceptance.

The sound of complete strangers cheering for the underdogs filled me up and gave me even more hope for acceptance.

I know my little guy is going to grow up just fine when there are loving hearts like that in this world!

And though, I don’t care for the real SF Giants (GASP!), I am cheering for these little Giants. Especially #1!

Newborn CUTENESS–Baby J

Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting an adorable baby boy who was about to turn 1 month old. I was excited for his session – after all I had photographed his grandmother a couple of times and she even graced the cover of SolanoFit magazine (on her blog, scroll down and you will see the cover in the left column).

This little handsome fella was wide awake for his session. I think he knew it was going to be his moment to shine in front of the camera!

We had hoped he would fall asleep so we can capture some adorable sleeping shots, but Baby J was not having it!

Look at his focus. He stared into the camera quite often. This is one of my favorite images!

Baby feet…Love me some baby feet!!!

Love the look of peace and content while he is in his mommy’s arms! Nothing else exists for him, but mommy!

I think he’s ready for his close-up!

I love how the sun spotlights him just right…how his little arm is posed. He looked so comfortable it made me want to nap.

It’s like he wants to just yell out “No more pictures, lady!!!!”

There is just something about tiny babies in jeans that is adorable. He all of a sudden looks like he is 6 months, though, doesn’t he?

Once Grandma got home, he fell fast asleep in her arms and we were able to capture sweet sleeping moments.

Down Syndrome Fact Friday–He Speaks …

A few weeks ago, I had to complete paperwork for Cody. It was a psychological evaluation for school to prepare for his Kindergarten IEP. (The “K” word still taste bitter on my tongue. I’m not ready for my baby to go to Kinder!!!)

As I was completing this form, something occurred to me that I had not realized before.

A lot of the questions were about communication and how he communicates at home and with friends. Cody is great at communicating his wants and needs to us and when he plays with his friends, they all seem to understand each other.

The one question that stopped me and made me think was - Can your child sing an entire song?

Yes, Cody can. He may not enunciate the words to their exact sound, but he knows the tune, note for the word and tempo of all the words. He may not sing the song like a “typical” child, but he still sings it.

That question made me realized that although Cody does not have the vocabulary of typical 4 year old, he has minimal issues with relaying his wants, needs, emotions, and personality. Those around him most understand his communication – the mix of words, sign language and physical direction/communication.

The other thing it made me realize is that when at school, Cody and his friends easily communicate with each other. A number of them have similar speech levels, but yet they understand each other. I have watched them have a complete conversation, though, majority of it was babble. BUT somehow, they laughed at what seemed just the right time, asked “what?” to prompt the other to repeat their comment, and ended their conversations appropriately.

It is easy to assume that children that cannot speak actual words cannot communicate, but as a parent of a little one that we affectionately call “mini mafia boss” at home because of his way of demanding and commanding when he wants things, I am here to tell you that although children may be delayed in speech and it is difficult for those unfamiliar with them to understand them, they can be perfectly capable of communicating. Take the time to observe them and you will soon see that their parents, family, friends, teachers and peers can easily identify what a gesture, a sign, or expression means.

My realization is that words are not the only thing needed to be able to “speak”. Yet another aha moment.

I’m BACK! and a Photography Exercise

After 3 weeks of nothing but sickness in our family, I am BACK! YAY!!! Yes, we still have the cough, cold and Cody is going through a new version of his sickness, but we are trying to make it over the hump of the February BLAHs.

I was hit with the flu last week and wow, that thing sure knocks you down! I haven’t had the flu in years and I had forgotten how “knock you down, don’t even try to get up, go to bed and sleep” the flu can be. I don’t wish that on anyone. I have been fever free for a few days now, yet my body still aches.

You all know how much I adore Me Ra Koh and the amazing world of Soar!

The greatest part of Soar! is that although you may have not have won and become the OFFICIAL Soar! recipient, you have the ability to follow every exercise and mimic the steps the ladies are taking during their Soar! year. Any great story teller provides not only the big picture, but also also the smallest details that play an integral part in the story.

I love details. Every little detail tells you something different about the overall story. It gives a true visual to the emotion, the setting, the characters.

From a “oooo” expression on the face after a collision of two wrestlers…

…to the way the pudgy fingers grasp the wrestler as he head-butts his opponent…

…to the smirk of triumph as his favorite wrestler stands a head above the opponent he just defeated.

Italy Diary–The FOOD

These were face size jars of Nutella! If I had one of these I would look like Winnie the Pooh with a honeypot!

I drank multiple cups of coffee daily and because of the delicious Italian coffee, I am now a coffee snob. :)

Italy Diary - Venice

A true Venetian tourist ensures that a Gondola ride is part of their itinerary. So…in true tourist fashion, we found ourselves some gondolas.

I was amazed to find that the gondolas were fancily decorated. It was like a "Pimp My Ride – Gondola Edition”. The drivers put quite a bit of money into their gondolas.

It had such a “classy” feeling to it.

This picture is courtesy of the gondola driver (who, by the way, did not sing to us. I was hoping for some “that’s amore”).

He was pretty excited to try to take a picture of us with two bridges behind us. We didn’t come out clearly, but the bridges are pretty.

Our trip started out through the grand canal (think New York traffic on water). I managed to find a “calm” place to take a picture of the canal, though.

It was pretty foggy that day, but it didn’t take away from the beauty of the island.

Then we took side canals for the rest of our tour. There are no streets for cars in Venice, but the canals are just as narrow as the streets in other towns. When other boats would pass by us, either we or the other boat were scooting up against the building to pass by. Oh and boat drivers drive the same way they drive on the Autostrada (I had to close my eyes a few times during the ride!).

The history in Venice is jaw-dropping. Buildings are centuries old and they work hard to preserve them.

We saw Casanova’s house, a number of museums and Churches and just TONS of beautiful architecture.

This building was pretty neat, but these heads and birds were a little creepy.

This reminded me of something out of the Davinci Code movie.

We never quite figured out what these were, but they were all around the island. We made up our own story that it was a public execution well. I’m sure we are pretty far off, but it made it things interesting.

This is a view of some of the houses in Venice. They make California yards look huge, don’t they? :)

See the little narrow alleys in between the buildings? Those are the “roads” for pedestrians and bicycles and we saw an occasional moped.

We ended up lost and could not find our way back to the train station. We felt like Ratatoullie walking through the alleys trying to find our way back. I knew I should have dropped bread crumbs or cheese! :) With the help of the GPS on my husband’s phone, we were able to find our way back (after 1 hour of dead ends).

The homes along the canal had both front doors in the alleys and back doors on the canal. You conveniently parked your boat then walked into your home. No docks, no walkways, nothing. Just a floating door.

We saw a lot of construction and renovation going on while there and I kept wondering how the construction dudes hauled their stuff around. There were bridges every few yards and I watched these men haul dollie after dollie of material to their destinations.

Then, we saw their “work trucks”, er, boat.

I would love to create a home with Italian designs and intricacies.

And I actually handed my camera over to him….rare moment, I know.

I Heart Faces Challenge - Cell Phone

This week's challenge is Cell Phone. The images submitted need to be captured on a cell phone.

If you have been reading this blog for awhile then you know I love my cell phone's camera. I no longer carry a point and shoot because I have this phone!

This image was taken yesterday as DJ and I enjoyed a mom and son outting at Starbucks. He enjoyed his hot chocolate and video games while I enjoyed my mocha and watching him play his Pokemon game. :)

Down Syndrome Fact Friday–How Do You Deal?

Last week, someone started their conversation with “can I ask you something personal about your son?”.

Most of the time, I know what this is leading to.

She had just met Cody the previous week. She knew nothing about his history, diagnosis or anything so I had an idea where this was going.

She then said “I don’t mean this the wrong way, but is there something wrong with your son?

“He has Down Syndrome, if that is what you’re asking.”

She comes from a different culture and had no idea what Down Syndrome was so I explained it to her.

“Can I ask you another question?”

“Of course".”

“What do you think when you look at him"?”

I have NEVER been asked that question before. Knowing she meant no harm or disrespect with her question, I told her that I saw nothing but love, innocence and my son.

“Does everything that come with Down Syndrome ever get to you? How do you deal?”

Knowing that she has medical issues that she was dealing with, I know that she asked this as a means of finding out ways to cope with her own issues.

I told her that I know she doesn’t see a light at the end of her tunnel and that is what is stopping her from enjoying life now. Stopping her from enjoying the present, the every day moments.

She asked me how I manage to always have a smile on my face.

I don’t know. I think I am just programmed that way. :)

Honestly, though, after going through the heart surgery, the hospitalization for bronchiolitis and everything in between and after, I think if I hadn’t been able to smile through it all, I would be broken.

No one teaches you the internal mechanism for coping with stress or depression. They can counsel you until they are blue in the face, but for me, the only way to cope with situations is to accept it and move forward with a positive outlook.

She asked if there were times where I feel drained. Bet your bottom dollar, I do. I’m a mom not superwoman. ;) The anxiety of not being able to control situations that are currently non-existent is draining. It is almost a daily battle in my head to remind myself that I need to stop worrying about conflicts that I am not even facing (for example, worrying about Cody’s kindergarten experience – if it will be stressful for him – when I know it will be more stressful for me than him and he will just be happy to be at school active with his friends).

In the end, I purposely surround myself with people with the same positive outlook that I have for my family and life. Smiling and laughing are the best medicines for my soul and I hope that soon, my friend will realize the same for herself.

I Heart Faces Photo Challenge–Red

This week’s challenge is in support of Go Red For Women.

Cardiovascular disease claimed the lives of nearly 500,000 American women each year, yet women were not paying attention. In fact, many even dismissed it as an “older man’s disease.” To dispel the myths and raise awareness of heart disease as the number one killer of women, the American Heart Association created Go Red For Women – a passionate, emotional, social initiative designed to empower women to take charge of their heart health.

Go Red For Women encourages awareness of the issue of women and heart disease, and also action to save more lives.

This is my first entry into one of their challenges and this picture of Cody just felt very appropriate.
